CARLSBAD, Calif. -- A 53-year-old Carlsbad man was in custody Tuesday on suspicion of punching his 76- and 77-year-old neighbors during an argument over the placement of opposing Prop 8 yard signs, police said.
Lawrence Pizzicara was arrested around 8 p.m. Monday after he inflicted "significant injuries" on a 76-year-old man and his 77-year-old wife by hitting them, Carlsbad Police Lt. Neil Gallucci said.
The assault took place in the 6900 block of Sandcastle Drive, where Pizzicara and the victims live, according to the lieutenant.
The dispute began when the victims confronted Pizzicara by saying he was placing No on 8 yard signs on their property in such a way that his signs blocked their Yes on 8 signs, Gallucci said.
Proposition 8 is the statewide ballot measure that seeks to ban same-sex marriage.
Carlsbad paramedics treated both victims at the scene, he said.
Pizzicara was taken to the Vista jail and faces charges of elder abuse and battery, according to Gallucci.
