Take Action Against San Diego's Governmental-Sanctioned
Attacks Against San Diego's Catholic Church Bishop:
San Diego City Council Must Terminate City Commissioner
Who Viciously Attacks Local Catholic Church Leader.
San Diego City Commissioner Engaging In Vicious Verbal Attacks
Against Leader of San Diego Catholic Diocese:
Gay Chairman of Human Relations Commission is in charge
of hearing city's religious discrimination complaints while
he engages in attacks against San Diego's Catholic Bishop.
2006: "Hate crimes will continue as long as people like Mel Gibson (Catholic actor)
are allowed to froth intolerance and not face consequences."
San Diego City Human Relations Commissioner Nicole Murray Ramirez statement
in August 14, 2006 interview in Vyuz News Website.
2007: "Bishop Robert Brom is a disgrace to his office and the Catholic Church, and
he should resign... It is an outrage that Bishop Brom tried to put the Roman Catholic
Diocese of San Diego in bankruptcy, and attempts to hide church assets so victims of
the church could not get the support or settlement they deserved. Bishop Brom is not
a man of God – he is more like a banker trying to horde all his money. There have
always been rumors about Brom being a big ole’ closet case (God knows he has had
a lot of queens on his staff), but what he most certainly is is one big disgrace and an
embarrassment to all Catholics."
San Diego City Commissioner Transvestite Nicole Murray Ramirez attacking
the Bishop of the San Diego Catholic Diocese in his
September 13, 2007 column in the Gay and Lesbian Times.
(Action Alert) If a male government official in San Diego was to dress up as a Muslim female to mock the Islamic religion, the reaction would be swift and decisive. The outcry would be so loud that the local govermental official would be quickly fired from his position. Yet, when it comes to mocking and disrespecting the leadership of the local Catholic Diocese, San Diego city officials, not only remain silent, but they regularly embrace a city council-appointed transvestite commissioner who viciously demeans and verbally assaults the Bishop of the San Diego Catholic Diocese
Nicole Murray Ramirez is no stranger to controversy, but his recent comments about San Diego's Catholic Bishop are so putrid that many local Catholics are demanding his resignation from the city's Human Relations Commission. The Human Relations Commission oversees complaints of religious and other forms of discirmination in the City of San Diego. The fact that Ramirez was appointed by the city council to the commission in the first place was a point of great contention among local Catholics.
Nicole Murray Ramirez, a male transvestite, has a history of mocking the Catholic Church by dressing up as a Nun while calling Bingo at a notorious gay bar in San Diego's University Heights area. The bar called Bourbon Street still features Ramirez dressed up as a Nun in an advertisement on their website. The ad states: "Fabulous Bingo with your outrageous Host Nicole" and is listed on the bar's calendar of events for Wednesday nights.
Added to the controversy, are the many other pornographic events that Commissioner Ramirez has been involved in. At one of those events, Ramirez was described as the emcee during a gay sex event at All Worlds Resort in Palm Springs. That event included men who won prizes for the size of their genitals. In a weekly column that he writes for the Gay and Lesbian Times, Ramirez has promoted xxx gay pornography and the Mr. Nude San Diego contest at a local gay bathhouse.
Despite the obscene nature of Ramirez's gay community escapades, the San Diego City Council appointed him to the city's Human Relations Commission in 2003. The Human Relations Commission was established in 1991 to address discrimination in the City of San Diego. According to the San Diego Municipal Code, the duties of the Human Relations Commission include:
Conduct programs designed to bring groups together to close gaps resulting from past discriminatory practices; address current or ongoing intergroup tensions; mediate disagreements among groups, individuals, and organizations which result from discriminatory practices within the scope of this Division. Process complaints which cannot be resolved through mediation. Render a written report of its activities to the Mayor and Council. Prepare and disseminate educational and informational material relating to prejudice and discrimination and recommend ways and means of eliminating such prejudice and discrimination.
Allowing anyone who has been rabidly involved in the promotion of xxx gay pornography to be a city council-approved "moral voice" on issues like religious discrimination disturbs many in San Diego's religious community. However, Catholics were extremely outraged when it became known that Ramirez was also selected by the mayor and city council to represent San Diegans on the Human Relations Commission when it was clearly known that he had a history of dressing up as a Catholic Nun and promoting gay pornography.
Here is how City Commissioner Ramirez, in the Gay and Lesbian Times, describes his own appearance as a Nun while calling Bingo at the gay bar Bourbon Street:
"For three years now, Fabulous Bingo, held every Wednesday night at 9:00 p.m. and every Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at Bourbon Street, has been attracting great crowds for a wild, fun night where anyone can win a color TV, microwave oven, $100, etc., etc. It’s FREE to play, and the crowd always has a good time with their nightly hostess, a rather fat old crazy Latina nun, who was thrown out of her “order” in Tijuana many decades ago (so the torrid rumors go!)."
That is what makes the current attacks against Bishop Robert Brom by City Commission Ramirez even more appalling to many San Diegans. City Commisioner Ramirez also serves on the Board of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF). According to the NGLTF, Murray-Ramirez, is serving his second term as the first elected chairman of the city of San Diego’s Human Relations Commission. The first elected chairman of the mayor's advisory board and the San Diego Chief of Police's advisory board.
According to a January 18, 2007 article in the Gay and Lesbian Times, City Commissioner Murray-Ramirez, a longtime GLBT activist, made history as the first openly gay man elected chair of the city of San Diego’s Human Relations Commission. The commission, which is made up of ethnic, religious, civic and community leaders, recently unanimously re-elected Murray-Ramirez for a second term as chair.
The San Diego Municipal Code states that appointments to the Human Relations Commission are made by the mayor and confirmed by the city council. When San Diego established the Human Relations Commission in 1991 it codified the necessity of the commission with these findings: In this City, the practice of discrimination on the grounds of race, religion, color, ancestry, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, medical condition, or place of birth, and the exploitation of prejudice related thereto adversely affects members of the above groups.
The municipal code further states that such discriminatory practices are inimical to the public welfare and good order in that they constantly frustrate and embitter members of the above groups, thereby diminishing their initiative and interest in the community; and tend to create intergroup hostilities and anti–social behavior.
To add further insult to the disgraceful attacks that Commissioner Ramirez has made against the Catholic Bishop and his office, is the fact that the Gay and Lesbian Times is distributed in many government-funded agencies in San Diego. This allows Ramirez's bigoted comments in his column to be given sanctuary and endorsment by the government.
Again, here is a portion of the comments made by San Diego City Commissioner Ramirez against the San Diego Catholic Bishop:
"he is more like a banker trying to horde all his money. There have always been rumors about Brom being a big ole’ closet case (accusing Brom of being homosexual); (God knows he has had a lot of queens on his staff) (accusing Brom's staff of being homosexual); but what he most certainly is is one big disgrace and an embarrassment to all Catholics."
Christians and Catholics must unite in challenging the City of San Diego for appointing any citizen to an official governmental agency who attacks religious leaders in the way that Ramirez has a history of doing. As private citizens, all Americans can certainly engage in free speech. However, when that citizen is appointed to a commission overseeing religious discrimination in the city, that person must remain neutral on their opinions of religious leaders.
Ramirez and his discriminatory attacks against Catholics and Christians have no place in the government of San Diego. To tolerate these continuous attacks is to add further prejudice against Christians and Catholics in the City of San Diego: a city whose government has attacked the Boy Scouts, attempted to remove the Mt. Soledad Cross and recently attacked the institution of marriage by issuing a legal brief in support of same-sex marriage.
If San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and the San Diego City Council do not take action to remove Human Relations Commission Chairman Nicole Murray Ramirez then they will be demonstrating that they are in agreement with Ramirez's bigoted attacks against the local Catholic Church leadership. Furthermore, to allow these disturbing attacks against the appointed leader of the largest religious group in San Diego is to further institutionalize anti-catholic discrimination within the local municipal government. It is this kind of hateful, anti-catholic rhetoric that helped to create the environment from which lesbian San Diego Fire Chief Tracy Jarman forced four San Diego Firemen to march in the 2007 San Diego Gay Pride Parade against their will. And two of those firemen are professing Catholics.
